JULY 2002 Highlights

Moon

Last Quarter: July 2nd.

New Moon: July 10th.

First Quarter: July 17th.

Full Moon: July 24th.

Planets

 

Venus: is at -4.0 to -4.2 magnitude and will be the only planet that you will be able to view this month.

 

Constellations

West: Leo, Virgo, Coma Berenices

South: Scorpius, Sagittarius, Ophiuchus & Libra.

East: Capricornus, Aquarius, Pegasus & Delphinus.

North: Cassiopeia, Ursa Major & Draco.

At zenith: Cygnus, Hercules, Bootes, Lyra, Aquila & Vulpecula.

The best nights in July to view without interference from the moon’s light are between July 3rd through July 14th.

Highlights

There are many objects to look for in the sky this month. The constellations Scorpio, Sagittarius and Ophiuchus are filled with clusters, nebula and double stars. You could spend the evening exploring this area with binoculars or a telescope.

The Milky Way is back in view! It will be from north-northeast to almost overhead and then to the south.

Club Stargaze

The June stargaze is Friday, July 12, 2002. This will be at Mt. Pisgah trailhead parking area. The turn off the parkway is at about mile 407. Drive up to the 2nd parking lot, which is a paved & at a dead end.

Blue Ridge Parkway Information Line is 828-298-0398 and go to Road Conditions on the menu.

Club Meeting

The June club meeting is Thursday, June 6, 2002, at 6 p.m. at Sim’s Group located at

230 Short Coxe Ave., Asheville, NC.
